Pre-Service Certificate in Teaching Skills

Around the world, at all levels, education policy and practice is focusing more and more on modern teaching methods, the direct application of teaching theories in the classroom, and improved assessment and evaluation.

Individuals wishing to pursue their career in teaching should be aware of these concepts and be equipped with tools necessary for effective delivery and achieving desired outcomes. The Pre-Service Certificate in Teaching Skills gives would–be teachers the skills and knowledge to achieve these goals.

Program Content: The Pre-Service Certificate includes education theory and hands-on activities which reflect the key stages of the teaching and learning cycle. The session content includes learner needs, planning and preparing learning programs and activities in accordance with these needs, child psychology, execution of planned activities, assessment of learners’ progress and achievements, evaluation of the learning program and own performance, and basic IT skills required for record keeping, documentation and assessment.

The program has built-in practical sessions where each participant is attached to faculty members of Scholastica, a prestigious school in Bangladesh. They will get a unique opportunity to observe professionals in their day-to-day activities such as handling learners, making necessary planning and preparation, implementing lessons, coordinating with stakeholders, providing feedback, communicating results and assessment. Moreover, the candidates will get a chance to actually teach learners and gather practical experience in classroom teaching. This module will also assist individuals to move closer towards the Cambridge International Diploma for Teachers and Trainers (CIDTT), an internationally recognized certification.

Program Structure: The Pre-Service Certificate in Teaching Skills is conducted over four months with approximately 96 hours of instruction and 64 hours of practical learning. The duration of the theory classes, which will be held twice a week, is three hours; the once-a-week practical sessions are four hours long and will be held in one of the campuses of Scholastica. Two sessions of basic IT skills have been incorporated in order to promote and develop use of technology in classroom teaching.

The medium of instruction will be English but Bangla may also be used in the delivery of the lesson for individuals wishing to teach Bangla or the National Curriculum.

Assessment and certification: Both on-going and assignment-based assessment will be used to determine the performance of the candidates. After successful completion of the program, participants will be certified by Services for Professional Education and Enterprise Development (SPEED).

Benefits for Individuals:
  • Increased employability and professional development: Individuals with formal evidence of structured learning and professional certification have a far greater chance of getting jobs than those who can only demonstrate subject knowledge. The certification can serve as the basis of a career in teaching in private schools in Bangladesh.
  • Saves Time: Individuals who have just graduated or wish to be a teacher can enroll in this program at any time and prepare themselves for entering the job market.
  • Value for money: This qualification for individuals offers a high-quality, good value solution to professional development needs.
  • IT skills enhancement: Apart from acquiring teaching skills, individuals will also experience application of IT skills in classroom teaching.
  • Opportunity to observe, learn and apply: Since this program requires attachment with educational professionals working in Scholastica, candidates will have first-hand exposure to classroom teaching of a global standard.
  • Portfolio: Individuals will have a portfolio ready at the end of the program that can be shared with prospective employers.
  • Pathway to an international benchmark: This program is a stepping stone for individuals to pursue Cambridge qualifications for teachers and trainers (CIDTT), valued in countries around the world.
